AURA welcomes Toronto-area individuals to support our work.

We are looking for compassionate, self-motivated people who are able to work independently.

Here are a few ways you can help:
  • In-office administrative and research support
  • In-office or remote translators and interpreters (especially in Dari/Farsi and Arabic)
  • Job-search helpers for sponsored newcomers (in-person or remote, with newcomers)
  • English conversation buddies for sponsored newcomers (in-person or remote, with newcomers)
  • Organizational leadership as a member of the Board of Directors (see more below)

AURA staff meet with all applicants before starting. Volunteers are expected to receive a clear Police Check (AURA can help you apply) and are asked to sign a confidentiality policy. AURA does not engage volunteers outside of Canada or assist in bringing someone to Canada to volunteer with us.

Become a Board Member

AURA supports diversity and looks for dynamic individuals wishing to make a key contribution to a small charitable organization that operates as a major player in refugee settlement.

Board member responsibilities:
  • Regularly attend monthly board meetings and important related meetings.
  • Actively participate on at least one Board Committee, such as:
  • Finance
  • Fundraising
  • Membership
  • Governance
  • Volunteer for and willingly accept assignments, completing them thoroughly and on time.
  • Stay informed on committee matters, prepare for meetings, and review and comment on minutes and reports.
  • Participate in fundraising for the organisation, including a meaningful personal donation.
Desirable attributes and skills:
  • The ability to work with small teams – the AURA staff and Board of Directors.
  • The ability to work alone i.e., to take on and complete work between meetings.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Previous non-profit board experience preferred.
  • Fundraising experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of foundation/business community and/or the refugee settlement community preferred.
Time commitment required:

This work is largely based on the individual’s initiative and commitment but is expected to be approximately 4 to 6 hours per month

How to apply:

Board members must reside in the GTA and be able to attend bi-monthly meetings in downtown Toronto in person.
